SOUTHERN CIRCUIT SAFARI: Selous and Ruaha

A trip to southern Tanzania is quite a different experience from the north. The large marching herds of herbivores and its accompanying predators (and tourists, nowadays) are exchanged for a more exclusive relationship with the wilderness. This is not to say that game watching is poor. On the contrary, wildlife is profuse and very much diverse. On top of this, the landscape leaves you speechless.

The main safari parks in the south are Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park. In addition to game drives, walking safaris are a means of nature discovery up-close in both places, as well as boating safaris in Selous. There is a range of accommodations from budget to top-notch. You can get into the southern parks flying from Arusha or Dar-es-Salam. The south could be an extension to your Great Migration safari in the north but we think it is a marvelous journey in its own right. We recommend staying at least 3 nights, if not 4, at each Selous and Ruaha.

As an extension to your safari we also recommend spending a few days of beach relaxation in the island of Zanzibar.

Sample Itinerary:

Day 1 Arrive Dar es Salaam (or Arusha). Stay at the Serena Hotel

Day 2 After breakfast fly to Selous. Stay at Roho-ya-Selous or Siwandu
